Passionate defenses often reveal deeper truths, and in the world of UFC, Valentina Shevchenko's unwavering support for Joe Rogan is a prime example. This week, the legendary flyweight champion, known for her incredible skill and precision, stepped into the verbal ring to defend the renowned UFC commentator. Shevchenko's admiration for Rogan is well-documented, making her passionate defense against criticism all the more compelling.
Shevchenko, gearing up to defend her belt against strawweight queen Weili Zhang at UFC 322 in Madison Square Garden, shifted her focus to a different kind of battle. This time, her opponent was Ronda Rousey, with whom she engaged in a heated exchange on X.
Speaking with Bloody Elbow in her role as a Stake Ambassador, Shevchenko articulated her belief that Rogan is a positive influence on young men. She advocates for his freedom of expression, a stance that directly counters Rousey's criticism during an appearance on Bert Kreischer's Bertcast.
- Curious about Joe Rogan's impact? He is a UFC mainstay and a podcast sensation.
But why the strong defense? When Rousey's criticism of Joe Rogan surfaced, many fans were left puzzled. However, Valentina Shevchenko was one of the few fighters who openly supported the veteran commentator, a figure celebrated as one of the most famous podcasters and comedians globally.
“I feel the truth has to be the first thing,” Shevchenko explained. “So when I see something that’s not right, I try to make things right. Joe Rogan is an amazing expert of martial arts, and he is a good example for youth.
“He is a hunter, he’s an artist, a musician, a sportsman. These are all qualities for a successful man and all qualities for the youth for what they have to look for. If someone started to speak very low of these qualities, it’s not right.
“It doesn’t matter what is the reason, something personal or not, you just cannot do that. Especially if you have people who listen to you, you have to speak things right. I am that kind of person, if I feel something is unfair I say ‘this is not the way, this is the right way’ and I just felt it was the right thing to make this post.”
Shevchenko's defense of Rogan stems from a deep-seated belief in truth and fairness. She sees Rogan as a multifaceted individual, embodying qualities that she believes are essential for success and worthy of emulation by young people. She views any disparagement of these qualities as unjust, emphasizing the importance of speaking the truth, especially when influencing others.
And this is the part most people miss... Shevchenko's stance raises a fascinating question: Is it the responsibility of public figures to uphold a certain standard of conduct, or should they be free to express themselves without fear of criticism?
