Sims Streamers Quit EA: The Impact on the Community and Creators (2025)

The Sims community is in a state of upheaval, with its most prominent figures making bold moves that have divided fans. The game's biggest stars are severing ties with EA, the game's publisher, and their decision is sending shockwaves throughout the community.

But here's where it gets controversial: for some creators, the choice to distance themselves from EA is a difficult one. They face a dilemma—should they stay loyal to a game they love and depend on, or should they prioritize their values and principles?

Last month, EA announced its acquisition by a group of investors, including the Saudi Arabia Private Investment Fund and Affinity Partners, founded by Jared Kushner, President Trump's son-in-law. This news sparked concern among players, especially given the new owners' conservative and anti-LGBTQ stance.

One of the first to respond was Kayla "LilSimsie" Sims, who has a massive following of 2 million subscribers on YouTube. She announced her departure from the EA Creator program, a move that would cost her special perks and potential revenue. Kayla's decision set a precedent for other prominent creators, like James Turner and Jesse "Plumbella" McNamara, who also chose to leave the program.

And this is the part most people miss: the decision to abandon a beloved game is not an easy one, especially when it impacts one's livelihood. For these creators, it's a choice between their passion and their principles.

"I think taking this stand is the right choice for me," wrote Jesse. "I'm privileged to be able to leave easily, but for others, it's not so simple."

Indeed, for mid-tier creators, the decision to leave can be devastating. One anonymous creator, who is just starting out, shared their dilemma. They have built a diverse community, including many BIPOC and LGBTQ individuals, and The Sims has been a safe space for them. However, the potential ownership by conservative entities goes against the game's inclusive spirit.

"I just haven't felt comfortable promoting content from a game that might be owned by those entities," they said. While their streaming career doesn't fully support them, they acknowledged the risk of damaging their trajectory by stepping away.

On Twitch, viewership is everything. Creators with larger audiences have more security, but for those in the middle, any disruption can be catastrophic. Many Sims creators are finding creative ways to express their discontent without jeopardizing their channels.

Some, like Renee, a Sims creator with a 20-year history, are choosing to stay with the EA Creator program for now. She hopes that external pressure, including an investigation requested by two US Senators, will stop the deal from going through.

"If I leave and this doesn't happen, I might not be able to regain access to these opportunities," she said. "I understand those who disagree, but I have to do what's right for me."

The Sims community is divided, with some creators choosing to leave and others staying. EA has released statements to calm fears, but for many, it's not enough. The creators I spoke to expressed deep pain and fear for the future of the game they love.

"I want to uphold my integrity and morals," said one creator leaving the program. "This buyout goes against my principles, and that's more important than any opportunities I might miss."
