Men's basketball preview: National champion NSU Sharks seek encore
The NSU Sharks, fresh off their national championship victory, are gearing up for another season of dominance. But with key players graduating, the team faces a challenging road ahead. Enter coach Jim Crutchfield, whose strategic brilliance has guided the Sharks to three consecutive NCAA Division II national finals, claiming titles in 2023 and 2024. However, the departure of starters MJ Iraldi, Ryker Cisarik, Tyler Eberhart, Alex Mangold, and Tommy Sala has left a significant scoring void. Crutchfield acknowledges the challenge, stating, 'We can replace the points, but it will be tough to replace the efficiency.'
Yet, the Sharks remain optimistic, led by returning starters Dallas Graziani and Ross Reeves. Graziani, a dynamic point guard, boasts impressive records, including single-game assists (17), steals (nine), and single-season assists (340). His shoulder surgery hasn't slowed him down, as he's been back on the court for a month. Reeves, a shooting guard, averaged 12.8 points and showcased his shooting prowess with a 38.1% 3-point field goal percentage. Crutchfield praises Reeves' improvement, hinting at a potential expanded role.
Other returning players, like Eli Allen, Ryan Davis, and Ryan Walsh, bring defensive prowess and shooting skills. The team's depth is further strengthened by the addition of Division I transfers, including Deon Perry, Gui Tesch, and Novak Perovic. Adren Roberts, Michael Bradley III, and Sami Elkamel return as well, providing consistency and scoring. The Sharks also welcome junior-college transfers like Ryan Van Eyck, Tarrance Warren, and Marko Sarenac, adding versatility and talent.
In the junior college ranks, Miami Dade College, led by Ernesto Rodriguez, a skilled shooter, and Anthony Breland, a Division I prospect, aims to build on their 19-13 record. Randy Smith and Anthony Gilkes, both back from injury, bring energy and shooting ability. David Verstraeten, Juvon Gameory, and Amari Davis, a versatile 6-9 center, are also key contributors. Meanwhile, Florida Memorial, under the leadership of Joshua Mendoza, faces the challenge of replacing their top scorers, aiming to build on their 47-15 record and NAIA playoff appearances.
As the season unfolds, the NSU Sharks will navigate the transition of key players' departures, relying on experience and talent to maintain their championship status. The competition is fierce, but with Crutchfield's guidance and the team's resilience, the Sharks are poised for another memorable run.
