This paper presents a general study of different elements that comprise the operation process for working a maritime container terminal, defining the operation ratios concerned and the interactions between them; similarly, the parameters that affect the operational process are designated. This paper aims to develop an approach to the problem focused on case-study: the Tunisian Terminal. A quantitative analysis is carried out which allows comparative strategies to be recognized and applied to practical cases. The correct planning and execution of operations on a container terminal is a critical element in the strategy of a terminal. Experience and knowledge of the problems that can arise is fundamental when attempting to treat these operations. In this paper, we identify the different measures of the various types of production, and the difficulties that could be faced when maximizing the container terminal’s productivity. In this chapter, the analysis centres on the organization and management of dry bulk shipping companies. Organizing is defined as the management function that deals with the assignment of tasks, the grouping of activities into departments, and the allocation of resources to the departments, while management refers to the attainment of organizational goals in an effective and efficient manner through the functions of planning, leading, and controlling (Daft, 2010). The need for a separate examination of the organizational and management approaches adopted by dry bulk shipping companies has to do with the characteristics of the environment in which they operate. As a rule, these are companies which are active in the world shipping market, derive their factors of production on a world-wide basis, and provide their services all over the world. In parallel, they are not subject to geographical limitations either as to the basic factors of production (capital-labour-institutional framework of operation of ships and offices), or as to the offer of their services.

An Empirical Study of Factors Affecting Reduction of Performance in Container Handling Operation

Efficiency of ports can create a remarkable influence in decrement of the period of ship stay at port, the period of sedimentation of goods and the decrement of freight payable to shipping companies. Finally, port efficiency also can cause customer satisfaction, demand increase and profitability rising up. In this light, this paper aims to identify and assess the Factors Causing Reduction of Performance in Container Handling Operation at the relevant studied container terminal; the present research has been conducted by use of TOPSIS method. In the first, having considered the daily census of container L/U in the pertinent terminal of the port, As well, brain storming cessions attended by experts from the mentioned terminal were held during which twenty two numbers of causes of delay were detected. Then, based on the criteria occurrence, severity, and probability of detection, the causes were scored. Then based on the obtained scores by each one of the causes, the matrix of decision making was formed and the mentioned causes were ranked by use of TOPSIS method. The obtained results via TOPSIS show that financial and administrative issues (C i = 0.80048) jointed with the factor of deficiency of horizontal L/U equipment (C i = 0.80048), then insufficiency of container yard (C i = 0.67782) and unpreparedness of factors external to the port (C i = 0.67577) were detected as the most important Factors Causing Reduction of Performance in Container Handling Operation of the studied port, respectively.

Optimisation of bulk carrier loading and discharge Report contributors

This report summarises progress made towards the problem submitted by Rusal Aughinish at the 93rd European Study Group with Industry. Rusal Aughinish is a company that refines alumina from bauxite. The problem presented to the study group was to review the percentage of time that the company’s inner berth was occupied and how to minimise this percentage. A number of different approaches were taken with this aim in mind. Firstly, data supplied by Rusal Aughinish was analysed. This analysis found that there is an optimal loading rate (with respect to eliminating demurrage costs) and suggested bands of optimal ship sizes. Further to these studies, two models of Rusal Aughinish’s shipping process were developed by the group: a simulation model and an analytical model. Both models were found to replicate the shipping process reasonably well and were, hence, used to study alumina output, berth occupancy and demurrage costs.

In the last four decades the container as an essential part of a unitload-concept has achieved undoubted importance in international sea freight transportation. With ever increasing containerization the number of seaport container terminals and competition among them have become quite remarkable. Operations are nowadays unthinkable without effective and efficient use of information technology as well as appropriate optimization (operations research) methods. In this paper we describe and classify the main logistics processes and operations in container terminals and present a survey of methods for their optimization.
