Apple Fitness+ is facing a crossroads, with its future under scrutiny as part of a larger reorganization. This news comes from a recent Bloomberg report by Mark Gurman, highlighting the need for growth and improvement within Apple's fitness offerings.
Since its launch in 2020, Apple Fitness+ has remained relatively stagnant, with minimal changes to its features and pricing. Despite a consistent subscription fee of $9.99/month or $79.99/year, the service has struggled to keep up with competitors, earning it the label of one of Apple's "weakest digital offerings."
The main challenges for Apple Fitness+ are high customer turnover and limited revenue potential. However, Apple is committed to enhancing the service, recognizing the dedicated fan base and the potential backlash from discontinuing it.
To address these issues, Apple is reviewing and restructuring the Fitness+ division. Sumbul Desai, Apple's VP of Health, will now oversee Fitness+, reporting directly to Eddy Cue, SVP of Services, following the retirement of COO Jeff Williams. This new structure aims to bring fresh focus and pressure to improve the service's performance.
While Fitness+ faces scrutiny, Apple has been actively enhancing its fitness ecosystem. Recent additions include Workouts on iPhone, eliminating the need for an Apple Watch, and heart rate monitoring on the latest AirPods Pro 3 and Powerbeats Pro 2, which seamlessly integrates with Fitness+. Additionally, the Apple Watch's Workout Buddy feature, powered by Apple Intelligence, provides personalized insights and motivation during workouts, drawing on the expertise of Fitness+ trainers.
Apple Fitness+ remains available for $9.99/month or $79.99/year, or as part of Apple One Premier. New buyers of Apple Watch, AirPods Pro 3, Powerbeats Pro 2, iPhone, Apple TV, or iPad can also enjoy a 3-month free trial.
As Apple continues to refine its fitness offerings, it will be interesting to see how Fitness+ evolves and whether it can reclaim its position as a leading digital fitness service.
